1.1 million or 24% of our citizens have a physical, sensory, learning, mental health or other disability. Maori experience a higher prevalence of disability. In 2013 26% of the Maori Population identified as living with a disability, 2022 estimates were at 32%. 95,000 or 11% of Tamariki & Rangatahi under the age of 15 have disabilities. Half of whom have conditions since birth. Currently 842,000 people are 65+ and with age comes disability. By 2028 there will be over 1 million people 65+

The biggest gap between people with and without disabilities is having the confidence, competence and opportunities to take part in activities of their choice

Employment Stats

Employment rate for disabled 15 to 64 year olds was 39.4 percent, compared with 81.7 percent of non-disabled people.
Of those employed
o 25% are underemployed
o Pay gap has doubled since 2017
o In growing employment disabled rates are in decline
